Above is an example of George Cleverley’s bespoke footwear. Russian leather was used in this plain toe derby, making it a historic piece of footwear, not to mention, perfectly fitting, and exactly what the owner desired as far as design.

Bespoke gives you the opportunity to have a shoe made to your exact specifications, both on fit and style. A last specific to your feet are made and used to make an extremely well fitting shoe, made just for your feet.

To commemorate their 120th anniversary, Edward Green has released a limited edition model, the Sandhurst, in two variations, on the 888 last with a double leather sole and on the 202 last with a dainite sole.

Each individually numbered pair will include a special box and special 120th anniversary shoe trees.

We chose Hazel Antique for our 888 lasted version and Mahogany Country Calf for our 202 version at LSW. LSBH will be releasing the 202 version with Rosewood Country Calf.

The George Cleverley Gladstone bag in Russian leather is an extremely rare and interesting piece of luggage. Made with “Russian leather” salvaged from the sunken Metta Catharina, this bag has a distinct look, smell, and texture only Russian leather can offer.

On December 10, 1786 a strong gale blowing from the Southwest forced the Danish brigantine, the “Metta Catharina” to seek shelter in Plymouth Sound. She had been bound for the Mediterranean with a cargo of hemp and leather from St. Petersburg.

By night, the winds had strengthened so hard that the Catharina broke free from her anchor, eventually striking Drakes Island and sinking on the Cornish side of the Sound. The crew were able to get ashore to safety but the ship and its cargo was lost – until 200 years later.

In 1973 divers from the British Sub-Aqua Club found the sunken Catharina 30 meters below the surface of Plymouth Sound. Further investigation revealed bundles of remarkably well preserved leather hides littering the sea floor.

These hides were tanned the traditional Russian way which involves soaking them in pits with willow bark and birch oil. The fact that this leather has survived for so long is due as much to the thoroughness and excellence of work carried out by the tanners of St. Petersburg, as well as the black mud at the bottom of Plymouth Sound.

We are extremely pleased to offer the extremely rare and beautiful “Russian” leathergoods produced by George Cleverley.

The chukka boot continues to be our top seller year after year. Alden’s shell cordovan chukka boot, #1339, is a timeless design. Some of our customers wear them casually, others wear them with suits. For our 5th anniversary model, I wanted to offer the classic chukka design, in a very comfortable, neutral fitting last, with a dressier welt and single oiled leather sole.
